Momo Ghar’s story begins with humble roots and a deep passion for authentic, homestyle cooking. Founded by Phuntso Lama, a Tibetan native, and her husband, Pramod Lama, Momo Ghar started as a small food stall in an international market in Columbus, Ohio. The Lamas wanted to bring the flavors of their Himalayan homeland to the local community, sharing the cherished tradition of momos—savory dumplings that are a staple in Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine.
When Momo Ghar opened in 2016, it was a simple operation, with Phuntso crafting every batch of momos by hand. She poured her heart and soul into perfecting each dumpling, combining freshly made dough with flavorful fillings and pairing them with her signature spicy tomato sauce. Word of mouth spread quickly, drawing in curious foodies and homesick immigrants looking for a taste of home. Customers would often line up in the small space to experience these lovingly prepared dishes.
Despite its unassuming start, Momo Ghar's authentic flavors and welcoming spirit captured the hearts—and palates—of locals. The success of the tiny food stall eventually led to national attention, including a feature on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri, cementing its status as a culinary gem in the Midwest. Guy Fieri titled the episode of season 28, episode 2 “Delicious Discoveries”. Today, Momo Ghar continues to thrive, but its heart remains rooted in the simple, soulful beginnings that made it a beloved institution.
The name "Momo Ghar" reflects its mission: "ghar" means "home," and the restaurant aimed to offer food that felt like it came straight from a family kitchen. This ethos resonated with the community, making Momo Ghar not just a place to eat but a cultural bridge that introduced Columbus to the rich culinary heritage of the Himalayan region.
